Online tutoring - personal enough?

On Saturday evening, standing in the beer queue at Twickenham, I became aware of two men behind me discussing 11 Plus, grammar schools and tutoring. Naturally my ears pricked up and, having twice previously reached the front of a similar queue, immediately decided to integrate myself into their ‘private’ conversation - fortunately they were tolerant!

I asked whether they had used tutors for their children. Both had. My obvious follow up was whether these had been in person or online. Both said in person and immediately balked at the concept of the online option. They told me that their children would not respond well to online tutoring, that they would not focus and that they needed to have one to one attention from an in person tutor. They said that they had a poor experience during lockdown and the online provision by the respective schools during this period.
